JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Six human cases of the West Nile Virus (WNV) have been reported in Mississippi in 2023.

A report from the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) showed the cases were reported in Hinds, Jackson and Lamar counties. Three of the six cases have been reported in Hinds County.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States. Cases of virus occur during mosquito season, which starts in the summer and continues through fall.

In 2022, Mississippi had seven human cases of West Nile virus with one death. This was the first West Nile virus death reported in Mississippi since 2017.

There are several ways that Mississippians can protect themselves ahead during mosquito season.
